Stoudemire to miss Knicks' preseason opener

A bruised left knee will keep forward Amare Stoudemire from playing in the New York Knicks' preseason opener Thursday night against the Washington Wizards.

Stoudemire bumped the knee during Wednesday's practice and it swelled, the New York Post reported.

Veteran Kurt Thomas will start in his place.

"If this is a regular-season game, he would play." the Post reported coach Mike Woodson as saying of Stoudemire. "We'll evaluate him tomorrow at practice and see where he is and see if he's ready to go Saturday.''

Stoudemire also missed two practices last week because of a sprained ankle. The team has been hit by injuries in the frontcourt to Stoudemire, reserve center Marcus Camby and forward Rasheed Wallace.

The Knicks play the Boston Celtics on Saturday.
