Hearing the news that Kayla Harrison won the first gold medal in judo for the US--in Olympic history--at the London Games, made me wonder if Kayla has considered training in MMA.
Olympic level judo talent? The more, the merrier video
Kayla competed at 78 kilograms. That's 172 lbs. of mostly muscle, I'm sure. Quite a weight cut for Kayla (age 22) if she intends to follow in the footsteps of Olympic bronze medalist in judo, Ronda Rousey, who competes in MMA at 135.
Having said that, it will be tough for any other female judoka to match Ronda's success. Brazilian jiu jitsu royalty, Rener and Ryron Gracie devoted one of their popular "Gracie Breakdown" videos to demonstrate the devastating armbar Ronda locked on Miesha Tate to win the Strikeforce championship. I wrote about that fight and the Gracie Breakdown here, "Would You Tap? Gracie BreakDown of Rousey-Tate Armbar"
Given what Strikeforce champion, Ronda Rousey has been up to in her first year of professional MMA fighting, her footsteps will be hard for anyone to follow: Ronda Rousey Nude on Cover of ESPN 'the Body Issue': Fan's Look
...And the list of Ronda's media accomplishments continues to grow with her current appearance on the popular TMZ show and a steady stream of interviews packed with no-holds-barred sound bites.
But that shouldn't stop Kayla from competing in MMA.
Apparently, Ronda thinks so too.
A fan tweeted Ronda a question, "If Kayla Harrison asked u to train MMA to her would u welcome her into your camp? # TeamUSA". Ronda responded with "hell yeah, I would"
Ronda tweeted a congratulatory message to Kayla, "Huge congrats to @Judo_Kayla winning gold in women's judo today!"
I noticed that former UFC fighter, Kenny Florian, re-tweeted Ronda's congratulatory message--which so far has been retweeted over 180 times.
Finding New Female MMA Fighters
I'm a huge fan of women's MMA. Having said that, it's still an unusual sport for women to practice. For women who do train in MMA (for fun, like me or for the opportunity to compete--like the women who fight for Strikeforce, Invicta FC or XFC), there are very few other women to train with and have as sparring partners.
I hope Ronda Rousey and Kayla Harrison start training MMA together.
In the meantime, Kayla lives and trains in Boston...I hope Kayla comes over to train MMA with me and the rest of Team FloMAC in Brookline, Massachusetts. That would be so sweet.
