    Stephen F. Austin stops Lamar 65-51

    BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) -- Taylor Smith scored 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting and Stephen F. Austin defeated Lamar 65-51 on Saturday night.

    Smith also had team highs with seven rebounds and four blocks. Hal Bateman added 18 points for the Lumberjacks (18-2, 9-1 Southland). Bateman's basket late in the first half made it 27-24 going into the break as Stephen F. Austin came back from a nine-point deficit midway through the half.

    The Lumberjacks shot 61 percent after halftime to finish at 48 percent for the game. They outscored Lamar 24-6 in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

    Amos Wilson led the Cardinals (2-20, 0-10) with 20 points. Lamar hasn't won since before Southland play began, beating LIU-Brooklyn at home on Dec. 29 before losing the next 10.

    Stephen F. Austin leads the nation in scoring defense, allowing 49 points per game.
