It was announced earlier today that the Golden State Warriors and point guard Stephen Curry have agreed to a four-year, 44-million dollar contract extension, just hours before they begin the 2012-2013 season. And I am 100-percent positive that my hometown team got it right.
With Curry's ankles the way they are, it's most certainly a risk. But it was one that the W's ownership and management had to take.
Stars like Curry don't come around all that often, and if he's able to stay healthy, he's not only a great contributor on the court, but the face of the franchise. Curry is a player that you want to market your team around, and with the Warriors' proposed move to downtown San Francisco, Steph is someone who will be very valuable for the team to have in more than just a basketball sense.
Now Curry and the words "if he's able to stay healthy" almost go hand in hand, and honestly, there is no guarantee that's going to be happen. In fact, I hate to say it, but if you go by recent history, it's almost certain that he will miss significant time at some point during this next contract. But as I said, it's worth the risk. He signed for a discounted rate (Nuggets guard Ty Lawsome just signed an extension for 4-years and 48-million dollars, so it was cheaper than that). But more than anything, it was worth it because Curry wants to be a Warrior.
That's been a huge issue for this team for almost as long as I can remember. The W's have to overpay their players to stay, and free agents to join, because they don't want to come to Golden State. But from everything he's said, Curry loves the Bay Area, loves the fans, and loves the team. A really good player loves the Golden State Warriors - injury risk or not, he needed to stay.
I'm thrilled for Steph and I'm thrilled for us as fans of the Warriors. Sure there's a chance it doesn't work out, there always is with long-term contracts, but for right now, let's look at this positively. We have a great player who not only wants to be here, but is now officially going to be here for many years to come.
Now bring on the season.
