The Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to release running back Chris Rainey, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

By league protocol, the Steelers won't be able to officially release Rainey until after the Super Bowl, but after his arrest in Gainesville, Fla., for allegedly slapping his girlfriend, the fifth-round pick will be let go.

"Chris Rainey's actions this morning were extremely disappointing," team general manager Kevin Colbert said in a release. "Under the circumstances and due to this conduct, Chris will no longer be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers."
