Stars winger Garbutt fined for Game 5 spearing incident

The SportsXchange

Dallas Stars left winger Ryan Garbutt was fined $1,474.36 for spearing Anaheim Ducks winger Corey Perry during Game 5 of the teams' first-round playoff matchup Friday.

The incident occurred in the first period, with Garbutt being assessed a major penalty for spearing and a game misconduct. Garbutt sneakily caught Perry with his stick in the groin as he was heading to the bench.

The fine is the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement with a Garbutt's $575,000 salary.

It is Garbutt's second incident that required supplemental discipline after being suspended for five games earlier this season for a head shot against forward Dustin Penner.

It is the second fine for spearing the NHL Department of Player Safety has handed out in these playoffs, with Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic being fined $5,000 for spearing Detroit Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser.
