Jim Plunkett. John Elway. Andrew Luck. All standout quarterbacks at Stanford. And it is that tradition that helped convince one of the top-ranked high school quarterbacks in the class of 2014 decide to play for David Shaw and the Cardinal.

Keller Chryst hopes that one day his name is mentioned in the same breath as former Cardinal quarterbacks who have starred at Palo Alto.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder verbally committed to Stanford on Friday. He had offers from Alabama, Arizona, USC and Pittsburgh, where his uncle, Paul Chryst, is the head coach.

Chryst, who is from Palo Alto, Calif., said he his hometown school was the best fit for him.

"I just felt like it was the best decision for me overall," Chryst told ESPN. "Every school had their own strong points, and I just felt like I fit in best at Stanford."

Chryst understands the pressure he will face to follow in the footsteps of Luck, Elway and Plunkett.

"It's great," Chryst said. "It's very humbling to even be mentioned with those guys. It's kind of exciting just thinking about what could happen in the future."

Some scouting services have Chryst ranked as the No. 1 pocket passer coming out of high school and as high as the 21st best prospect in the 2014 recruiting class.

Playing for Palo Alto High, Chryst compiled 2,489 passing yards, 28 touchdowns through the air and another four rushing scores.

His father is the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers.
