Spurs Fan: Top 5 Tottenham Hotspur Goals from September 2012

Yahoo Contributor Network

Like goals? Looking for a Premier League team to support? If so, then Tottenham Hotspur under manager Andre Villas-Boas may be for you. Spurs have scored in each of their Premier League games thus far this season, they routed Carlisle in their first Capital One Cup match of the campaign, and they were only held scoreless in September by Lazio in Europa League action. Due to Tottenham finding the back of the net as often as they did, I decided to pluck goals from each of those five contests when putting this list together. Otherwise, three of the five goals listed below would be from that historic result at Old Trafford, one Spurs fans everywhere won't soon forget.

Top 5 Tottenham Hotspur goals from September 2012 #5: Townsend at Carlisle

Both Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale scored similar goals in September as did Andros Townsend during Tottenham's cup clash at Carlisle. Unlike the other two players, Townsend began his own run by creating a turnover in the midfield, and he also didn't have a teammate completing a darting run down the pitch in order to serve as a distraction. Townsend also did well to get around a defender before slotting a near-post shot past the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net.

Top 5 Tottenham Hotspur goals from September 2012 #4: Somewhat flukey

The previously mentioned Bale got off to a slow start at the beginning of the AVB era. He opened his account when Tottenham hosted Reading on September 16 thanks to a little bit of luck. Kyle Walker played a low cross into the box for the speedy winger, and Bale swung his right foot to bury what was to be Tottenham's second goal of the match. The ball bounced at the last moment and Bale miss-hit the cross with the upper portion of his boot, but the ball still looped up into the top left corner of the net. Bale has been his old consistent self since finding that first goal of the campaign. Whatever it takes, I guess.

Top 5 Tottenham Hotspur goals from September 2012 #3: Welcome

Moussa Dembele introduced himself to the White Hart Lane faithful by being the best Tottenham player on the field when Spurs hosted Norwich City at the beginning of the month. Eight minutes following the hour-mark, Dembele accepted and immediately controlled a pass from Defoe while right outside the penalty area. The former Fulham man juked around his defender before setting up a left-footed shot that Dembele rocketed into the far corner. Dembele impressed throughout the first month of his Spurs career, immediately fitting into AVB's lineup and showing why Spurs signed him last month.

Top 5 Tottenham Hotspur goals from September 2012 #2: Team effort

The game-winner against QPR, Tottenham's second straight Premier League win of the month, was set up when a turnover sprung Jan Vertonghen on a run down the center of the field. The defender played Bale into the left portion of the box, and Bale's first-touch shot deflected off of the outstretched goalkeeper before bouncing off the crossbar. The rebound fell right to Defoe, and the front man struck the ball past a defender and into the empty net. Defoe being in the right place at the right time is nothing new, of course, but this was far from his best play of the month.

Top 5 Tottenham Hotspur goals from September 2012 #1: History

It seemed as if the potential win at Manchester United was going to disappear after Nani brought the hosts to within a goal in the 52nd minute of that game. Spurs produced an immediate answer, however, thanks to three different players who ensured that the visitors wouldn't be denied of their historic victory. Defoe did well to control a diagonal ball, keeping it from bouncing out of play. He then held off a defender before playing Bale into the box. This time, Bale's deflected effort on goal fell to the unmarked Clint Dempsey, and the American international opened his Spurs account with the goal that ultimately earned Tottenham the win.
