With Major League Soccer rosters set to freeze Friday, Sporting Kansas City made one addition for its playoff push, tapping again into the Barcelona youth pipeline.
The club signed Argentine veteran left back Federico Bessone on a free transfer, and he joins midfielder Oriol Rosell as players who honed their craft at La Masia before making their way to the United States. Bessone is eligible to play immediately and fills Sporting KC's 30-man roster allotment.
At 29, Bessone has had a journeyman career, which includes stops at Swansea City and Leeds United. He was most recently with Oldham Athletic but had been training with Sporting KC for a little while before making his signing official.
"I've been training here for two weeks and the quality of the team is magnificent," Bessone said in a team release. "I'm very happy to be here. The city is great, the people are so friendly and my teammates have been tremendous with me."
Bessone joins a club currently in a three-way tie on points with the Montreal Impact and New York Red Bulls atop the MLS Eastern Conference, although Montreal has two games in hand. Sporting KC is also just three points off the pace for the Supporters' Shield.
