Sporting Kansas City may have settled for a draw at home against an opponent it thoroughly dominated Wednesday, but the MLS side will advance to the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals all the same. Follow GOAL.COM on Twitter
Needing just a tie to win Group 2, Kansas City (2-0-2) played to a 0-0 draw with Honduras' CD Olimpia (2-1-1) at Sporting Park. By topping the three-team group, Kansas City secured passage to next spring's knockout stage.
The MLS side controlled the match from beginning to end, seizing nearly 70 percent of the possession. Kansas City came close to taking the lead in the 29th minute, but Olimpia goalkeeper Noel Valladares got down to deny Jacob Peterson's header with a fine save.
Sporting thought it had gotten that elusive goal nine minutes after halftime when Graham Zusi put the ball in the back of the net. But the strike was called back on a tight offside call.
