Speed on Ice: Olympic Speed Skating Records

A Look at the Winter Olympic Records in 12 Medal Events for Long Track Speed Skating

Yahoo Contributor Network

With competitors reaching speeds of 40 miles per hour, few events of the Olympic Games produce more excitement than long track speed skating.

Unlike most contests, individual competition rapidly takes on far less importance than the struggle by participants to beat the clock. Though two skaters share the 400-meter length of ice at all times, these Olympians are judged by their overall time.

As a result of the emphasis on the clock, speed skating records are of great significance as fans follow this thrilling sport. With 12 total medal events, speed skating competition typically spans the length of an entire Olympics, so the battle to break records draws considerable interest.
