LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (AP) -- The Special Olympics kicks off in New Jersey next month for 3,500 athletes from all 50 states.

The athletes will compete in 16 sports at various venues, including on the campus of Princeton and Rider University, from June 14-21. A state-wide torch run begins June 11 in New York, travels to the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia and ends in Newark.

The opening ceremony will be held at the Prudential Center. A youth summit will highlight acceptance and inclusion at schools. Some 10,000 volunteers will help with the event, which includes the new sports of triathlon and baseball.

The Special Olympics were founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968.
