NCAA Tournament South Region Overview

Seed

Team (Record; Conference)

Highlight Video

1.

Ohio St.

Ohio State Buckeyes (30-3; Big Ten)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: The Buckeyes and the Thad Five are even better than originally billed. It was like high school all over again for freshmen and longtime teammates Greg Oden – the acclaimed 7-footer – and Mike Conley Jr. as the Buckeyes won the Big Ten tournament. More
Y! Sports Prediction: Elite Eight

2.

Memphis

Memphis Tigers (30-3; C-USA)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: The Tigers were unbeaten and unchallenged in an overmatched Conference USA. So how good are the guys with the nation-leading 22-game winning streak? Who knows? Chris Douglas-Roberts had his moments, enforcer Joey Dorsey was C-USA's top defender and Jeremy Hunt contributed upon his return from what was called his permanent dismissal in October 2005. More
Y! Sports Prediction: Sweet 16

3.

Texas A&M

Texas A&M Aggies (25-6; Big 12)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: Billy Gillispie was the perfect guy to corral such Texas talent as Joseph Jones and sharp-shooter Josh Carter. Gillispie inherited All-American Acie Law IV, who saves his best for last. If Law's scoring in the final four minutes of Big 12 games was projected over 40 minutes, he'd average 63 ppg. More
Y! Sports Prediction: Region champion and Final Four

4.

Virginia

Virginia Cavaliers (20-10; ACC)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: If guards are what make the NCAA tournament go round, look out for the Cavaliers. There might be no better tandem than Sean Singletary and J.R. Reynolds. They helped christen the new John Paul Jones Arena with a share of Virginia's first regular-season ACC title since 1995, despite being picked to finish eighth. More
Y! Sports Prediction: Second round

5.

Tennessee

Tennessee Volunteers (22-10; SEC)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: The Vols live beyond the arc. Chris Lofton led the way with 90 three-point baskets – and he missed three games – and Tennessee set a school record with 279. Lofton struck for 35 points against Texas, 34 against Memphis and 29 against Vanderbilt. More
Y! Sports Prediction: Sweet 16

6.

Louisville

Louisville Cardinals (23-9; Big East)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: Despite getting off to a 12-6 start, the Cardinals avoided being shut out of the tournament for a second straight season. Freshman Derrick Caracter, who missed 16 games in a battle of wills with coach Rick Pitino, finally became a major contributor, averaging 13.2 points in the final six regular-season games. More
Y! Sports Prediction: Second round

7.

Nevada

Nevada Wolf Pack (28-4; Western Athletic)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: Nevada fell from a top-10 ranking to a No. 7 seed after a pair of losses this month to Utah State. Nick Fazekas and Co. will be anxious to prove last year's first-round upset was the exception, not the norm. More
Y! Sports Prediction: First round

8.

BYU

Brigham Young Cougars (25-8; Mountain West)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: At this rate, the Cougars could be winning national titles by 2009. Dave Rose's promotion from assistant after a 9-21 season two years ago paid off with a 20-9 turnaround last season and this year's Mountain West title. League MVP Keenan Young, center Trent Plaisted and the rest of the team benefited from the coaching continuity. More
Y! Sports Prediction: First round

9.

Xavier

Xavier Muskteteers (24-8; Atlantic 10)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: Coach Sean Miller shook up the Musketeers after the A-10 favorites fell to 15-7. PG Drew Lavender came out of his shell, G Stanley Burrell found his shot, 6-foot-9 F Justin Doellman stayed put inside, and they all played better defense. What followed was a nine-game streak, with eight of those victories by 10 points or more. More
Y! Sports Prediction: Second round

10.

Creighton

Creighton Bluejays (22-10; Missouri Valley)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: The Blue Jays were more a work in progress than the nations No. 19 team, which is where AP had them to begin the season. Coach Dana Altman slowed things down and, with four games remaining, went to a man-to-man defense that limited opponents to 35.6-percent shooting from the field and helped the Jays win the MVC tourney. More
Y! Sports Prediction: Second round

11.

Stanford

Stanford Cardinal (18-12; Pac-10)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: Stanford struggled with injuries and down the stretch, losing four of its last five, including an 82-79 overtime loss to USC in the Pac-10 tournament. Additionally, Lawrence Hill left on crutches with a lower back and hip contusion, just as Anthony Goods made his return from a high ankle sprain. More
Y! Sports Prediction: First round

12.

Long Beach St.

Long Beach St. 49ers (24-7; Big West)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: The 49ers make up for their lack of size (no starters taller than 6-6) by pushing the ball at all opportunities (they averaged 79.9 ppg) and experience (seven seniors in the rotation). The 49ers averaged barely 60 points just two years ago, but they led the nation in scoring last season when coach Larry Reynolds scrapped his conservative offense. Big West MVP Aaron Nixon and Kejuan Johnson lead the way. More
Y! Sports Prediction: First round

13.

Albany

Albany Great Danes (23-9; America East)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: The Great Danes nearly made history last year but missed becoming the first No. 16 seed to win an NCAA tournament game despite leading UConn by 12 with less than nine minutes to go. Jamar Wilson is the America East back-to-back MVP, owns his schools career scoring record and will be going to his second NCAA tournament. More
Y! Sports Prediction: First round

14.

Penn

Pennsylvania Quakers (22-8; Ivy League)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: The Quakers advanced to their third NCAA tournament in a row with first-year coach Glen Miller and a trio of seniors – Ibby Jaaber, Mark Zoller and Steve Danley – that won 48 of 56 Ivy League games. Key moment: they rallied from 19 down to beat Temple and their ex-coach, Fran Dunphy. More
Y! Sports Prediction: First round

15.

North Texas

North Texas Mean Green (23-10; Sun Belt)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: Six years ago, Johnny Jones took over a program that had won only 20 games over the four previous seasons. The Mean Green went 7-2 while their best player, F Kendrick Davis, was out because of a hand injury, and they won in the Sun Belt semifinals though he was out because of a stomach virus. More
Y! Sports Prediction: First round

16.

C. Conn. St.

Central Connecticut St. Blue Devils (22-11; Northeast)

Regular-season highlights

Overview: The Blue Devils dress only nine players and got off to a 3-9 start, yet they are the talk of , and the long-shot hope for, the state of Connecticut with UConn out of the tourney. Tristan Blackwood, Obie Nwadke and conference MVP Javier Mojica combine to power the offense. More
