South Dakota names assistant as head coach

The SportsXchange

The University of South Dakota on Friday named Joey James interim basketball coach effective immediately. James replaces Dave Boots, who retired suddenly on Tuesday after 25 seasons with the Coyotes, the Argus-Leader (Sioux Falls, S.D.) reported.

The 36-year-old James had been an assistant under Boots for 10 years. He played for the Coyotes from 1997-99.

According to David Herbster, South Dakota athletic director, James will be evaluated at the end of the season and a national search might take place. Herbster said Boots' decision to resign this close to the beginning of the season makes a national search right now impossible.

"I'm excited and I'm glad that this has come to a conclusion," James told the Argus-Leader.

The Coyotes made it to the NCAA Division II Tournament in James' first five seasons as an assistant. The team has a 194-112 record, seven 20-win seasons, and two conference championships with James on its bench.
