The Red Sox also receive right-handed reliever Bryan Villarreal from the Tigers, and send three minor leaguers – right-handers J.B. Wendelken and Frank Montas and shortstop Cleuluis Rondon – to the rebuilding White Sox.
After nearly a year of overhauling an underachieving and dysfunctional roster, the Red Sox are surprise contenders in the AL East. At the deadline they sought a starting pitcher to lengthen a rotation that is missing Clay Buchholz, who, because of a shoulder injury, has not pitched in nearly two months.
Peavy, who missed six weeks this season because of a fractured rib, is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA. He is under contract through 2014 for about $24 million. The Red Sox will pick up all but about $4 million. He has made two starts since coming off the disabled list, allowed six earned runs over 13 innings, and the White Sox won them both. In a year the Red Sox retooled with players they believed were of high character, and Peavy, well liked during stints in San Diego and Chicago, fits that mold. While he did not pitch well in two postseason starts while with the Padres, his best months typically have been August and September.
Iglesias, 23, is a defense-first shortstop, who, in spite of a recent slump, batted .330 in 212 at-bats for the Red Sox. He becomes the Tigers’ shortstop of the future. In light of Peralta’s possible suspension, the future could start later this week. He is far better than Peralta defensively.
Garcia, 22, has batted .269 in 130 major-league at-bats. His frame – 6-foot-4, 240 – projects power, though he has never hit more than 14 home runs in a professional season. He hit .455 against the New York Yankees in the ALCS.
The Red Sox have a future shortstop in Xander Bogaerts, though Iglesias has played more third base than shortstop in 2013. Will Middlebrooks or Bogaerts could take over at third immediately for the Red Sox.
