The Dallas Mavericks voided a one-year contract recently signed by forward Rashard Lewis after learning he needs knee surgery, a source told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday.

Lewis’ agent, Colin Bryant, told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday that his client learned during his physical with the Mavericks that he would need right knee surgery. The Mavericks announced signing Lewis to the veteran’s minimum on July 19. The severity of Lewis’ knee injury is still unknown and his voided contract immediately makes him a free agent.

The Mavericks have not directly stated that they have voided Lewis’ contract, but Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson addressed the issue in a statement Wednesday.

“It came to our attention during Rashard Lewis’ physical that he is in need of a medical procedure on his right knee,” Nelson said. “We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery and continued success in his remarkable career.”

Lewis, 34, spent the past two seasons with the Miami Heat and won a NBA championship in 2013. The 16-year NBA veteran averaged 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game last season.
