Sounders buy out DP Tiffert's contract

Prior to falling in its season-opening match to the Montreal Impact, the Seatte Sounders made a notable roster move that frees up space for another potential major transaction.

The Sounders announced a buy-out agreement with German midfielder and Designated Player Christian Tiffert ahead of the 1-0 loss to Montreal, ushering the one-time Bundesliga assists leader out of the Emerald City after less than a full season in MLS. In 12 regular season games, Tiffert accounted for three assists, and he tallied another assist in one of his four playoff appearances as well.

Tiffert, 31, signed with the Sounders last July after a successful spell at Kaiserslautern, but he did not provide the difference-making lift the club had hoped. At a base salary of $600,000 in 2012 (according to MLS Players' Union documents), he became an expensive luxury that the club could not afford, especially with its crowded stable of midfielders and other areas of need taking priority.

That extra money and salary cap space figures to be put to use quickly, as, according to multiple reports from the U.S. and Spain, the Sounders are closing in on a deal for Levante and Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins.
