The Sooruz Lacanau Pro resumed in France on Thursday, August 16, 2012. Mother Nature favored the surfers with rambunctious, five to six foot waves. Here's a quick look at some of the early results:
Round 96 Results
Round 96 opened up in style courtesy of surfer Marlon Lipke (DEU). During his Heat 1 matchup against Matt-Lewis Hewitt (NZL), Ruda Carvalho (BRA) and Miguel Blanco (PRT), Lipke delivered a remarkable 8.33 point ride. If you ask me, it was the best ride of the morning. I thought that he displayed a lot of skill and speed. Lipke backed that ride up later in the surf heat with a 6.17 point ride. He won the heat with 14.50 points.
Surfer Derek Peters (USA) kept the excitement going during his Heat 2 matchup against Ty Watson (AUS), Ricardo Ferreira (BRA) and Beyrick De Vries (ZAF). He served up a beautiful 8.17 point ride. Even though it was the highest wave score of the surf heat, it wasn't enough to garner him the win. That honor went to Ty Watson. Ty Watson posted a 5.23 point ride and a 6.83 point ride. He won the surf heat with 12.06 points. Derek Peters completed the surf heat with 10.97 points.
Surfer Balaram Stack (USA) also managed to post a high wave score during his Heat 6 matchup against Davey Brand (ZAF), Frederico Morais (PRT) and Jordin Watson (AUS). Stack delivered a rock-solid 8 point ride. It was the best one of the surf heat. He backed it up with a 7.07 point ride and won the surf heat with 15.07 points.
Thursday morning's surf heats also provided a few nail biting finishes. Heat 8 was one of them. The heat featured surfers Ugo Robin (FRA), Steven Pierson (PYF), Manuel Selman (CHL) and Halley Batista (BRA). Ugo Robin won the surf heat with 11.37 points. Steven Pierson completed the surf heat with 11.07 points.
Heat 9 also ended with a close finish. It featured surfers Gavin Gillette (HAW), Jose Ferreira (PRT), Jason Harris (USA) and Andre Silva (BRA). All four surfers opened up the heat by posting low to mid range scores. Then Gavin Gillette delivered a 6.17 point ride. Surfer Jose Ferreira answered back by serving up a 6.03 point ride. In the end, Gavin Gillette won the surf heat with 10.84 points. Jose Ferreira completed with surf heat with 10.40 points. Jason Harris wasn't far behind him. He finished the surf heat with 10 points.
Once Round 96, Heat 9 ended, the Sooruz Lacanau Pro's organizers called for a short technical break. The surfing competition is expected to resume later this afternoon with Heat 10. Heat 10 is slated to feature surfers Lucas Santamaria (ARG), Alexandre Chacon (BRA), Vasco Ribeiro (PRT) and Teppei Tajima (JPN). Personally, I'll be rooting for Lucas Santamaria. I am also looking forward to watching Mateia Hiquily surf again in Heat 13. During the heat, he is expected to surf against Eneko Acero (EUK), Marco Fernandez (BRA) and Luel Felipe (BRA).
Killeen Gonzalez enjoys watching water sports with her family. She also has a history of interviewing pro surfers.
