The Sooruz Lacanau Pro got off to a rousing start in France on Tuesday, August 14, 2012. The surfers were able to complete two entire rounds. It's a good thing too because the weather on Wednesday morning was less than stellar. Stormy skies put the venerable surfing competition temporarily on hold. The organizers are expected to reassess the conditions at 8 a.m. CEST on Thursday, August 16, 2012. In the meantime, here's a quick rundown on some of Tuesday's results:
Round 128 Results
Mateia Hiquily (PYF) was a true stand out on Tuesday. He earned the highest surf heat score in both rounds. In Round 128, Heat 13 he also delivered what perhaps could be considered the best maneuver of the day. It was a stunning kerrupt-flip that netted him 9.67 points. Hiquily delivered the jaw-dropping move when there was less than 8 minutes left to go before the final buzzer. Prior to that time, the surf heat had been rather uneventful. He won the matchup with 16.50 points.
The 2nd highest surf heat score of the round went to Matt-Lewis Hewitt (NZL). He busted out a remarkable 9 point aerial in the waning moments of his Heat 1 matchup against Tom Cloarec (FRA) Ricardo Ferreira (BRA) and Edouard Delpero (FRA). Matt-Lewis Hewitt won the surf heat with 15.57 points.
The 3rd highest surf heat score of the round was captured by Lucas Santamaria (ARG) during his Heat 10 matchup against Jose Ferreira (PRT), David Van Zyl (ZAF) and Hugo Palmarini (FRA). During the heat, Santamaria fired off a rock-solid 7.67 point ride and a 6.23 point ride. He won the surf heat with 13.90 points.
When it came to high scores in Round 128, Mateia Hiquily, Matt-Lewis Hewitt and Lucas Santamaria were not the only stand outs. Eduardo Fernandes (PRT) served up a superlative display of surfing skill during his Heat 12 matchup against Dylan Kowalski (USA), Jatyr Berasaluce (EUK) and Dege O'Connell (HAW). He delivered a beautiful 8.33 point ride towards the end of the surf heat. It turned out to be one of the best wave scores of the round.
Round 128 also had its share of surf heats with nail biting endings. Despite the low scores, Heat 16 had one of the closest finishes. It was between Jorgann Couzinet (REU), Tristan Guilbaud (FRA), Jayce Robinson (GBR) and Rudy Marechal (FRA). Tristan Guilbaud won the surf heat with 7.37 points. Rudy Marechal completed the heat with 7.04 points. Jorgann Couzinet finished the heat with 7 points.
What's Next?
The Sooruz Lacanau Pro is expected to continue through Sunday, August 19, 2012. Once the weather improves, the surfers will be able to kick off Round 96. Heat 1 is expected to feature surfers Miguel Blanco (PRT), Matt-Lewis Hewitt (NZL), Ruda Carvalho (BRA) and Marlon Lipke (DEU). In my opinion, it should prove to be yet another excellent surf heat. Surf fans will be able to watch it all unfold on the Sooruz Lacanau Pro's website.
