Bayern Munich, Juventus collide in classic matchup in Champions League quarterfinals

Will Bayern Munich's offensive barrage break down Juventus' defensive dominance?

That's the big question going into the first leg of Tuesday's showdown between soon-to-be-crowned German champion Bayern and defending Italian champion Juventus in the most intriguing and evenly matched tie of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.

Both clubs promise championship-level quality. The European powers are on the verge of claiming domestic championships, with Bayern 20 points clear in the German Bundesliga and Juventus nine points clear at the top of Serie A in Italy.

With a win on Tuesday, Bayern Munich will collect its 150th victory in the UEFA Champions League (formerly European Cup). Bayern has won Europe's premier club competition four times, but the most successful team in the history of the Bundesliga has not won club football's most coveted trophy in a dozen years.

Juventus has lost in the Champions League final five times, a heartache shared by its quarterfinal opponent. Bayern and Juventus are two of three teams to have won the Champions League and lost in the final on five separate occasions.

Two of the last three years, the Bavarians have reached the final of Europe’s elite club competition. Both times, Bayern lost in the title game, falling to Chelsea last year under the most improbable of circumstances.

Playing at its home arena, Bayern took the lead seven minutes from full time. However, with two minutes remaining in regulation time, Didier Drogba scored a powerful header to take the game into extra time. Bayern's world-class winger, Arjen Robben, would be denied on a penalty in extra time before Bayern ultimately lost in a shootout.

Following Calciolpoli and Juventus’ subsequent forced relegation for fixing matches, Juve disappeared from European football for a few years. In 2012-13, The Old Lady returned to Europe's top club competition and is one of only two unbeaten sides with regards to Champions League play this season (Borussia Dortmund is the other).

Juventus has been able to attain success through defense, entering Tuesday with a streak of 490 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal in the Champions League. Bayern, on the other hand, has been scoring goals at every stop. On Saturday, Bayern won 9-2 over Rafael Van der Vaart and Hamburg. The Bavarians have 18 European goals entering the quarterfinals to tie Real Madrid for the most in the Champions League this season.
