A's re-sign RHP Colon

The Oakland A's re-signed right-handed pitcher Bartolo Colon to a one-year contract, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday.

Colon will make $3 million in 2013 but incentives could up that amount to $6 million.

Colon, 40, who was suspended 50 games in August for using performance-enhancing substances, still has five more games to sit out when the season starts in April.

The A's don't mind signing suspended players, as evidence of them giving Manny Ramirez a minor league deal last season. He had to sit out for a second performance-enhancing drugs violation. He was eventually let go after failing to produce enough for their Class AAA Sacramento club.

"We understand these suspension situations are handled by the league and the players' association under rules set by the CBA," A's general manager Billy Beane said. "Over the years, there have been quite a few players in this situation. That's why there is an agreement: Once he's served the suspension, he's paid his debt."

Colon's incentives are based on him pitching in relief. The A's brought back Colon to add pitching depth.

Colon, who earned $2 million last season, went 10-9 with a 3.43 ERA before the suspension.
