Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin to miss start of training camp with injuries

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin will be held out of the start of training camp for precautionary reasons. General manager Jim Rutherford said the two players suffered minor injuries preparing for camp.

Crosby’s injury is not related to the wrist he injured late last season and spent the summer rehabbing according to the team. Head coach Mike Johnston says that he expects the recovery timeline to be “very short.”

This is probably not the most comforting news to Penguins fans as the team reconvenes for the start of training camp, but it doesn’t sound terribly serious.

The Penguins are looking to start fresh with a new general manager and new head coach after another early postseason exit last year. Pittsburgh has been bitten hard by the injury bug over the last few years, so to see something like this happen before camp even begins might be a little unsettling.

Crosby is coming off an MVP season in which he led the league with 104 points in 80 games while Malkin had 72 points in 60 games last season.
