Showalter close to three-year extension with Orioles

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter is close to getting a three-year contract extension, CBS Sports reported Friday night.

The deal could be announced next week. It will keep him in Baltimore through 2016.

Several Baltimore-area media outlets reported that Showalter met with Orioles owner Peter Angelos on Friday.

The Orioles, under Showalter, finished 93-69 last year. It was the team's first winning season since 1997.

The two-time Manager of the Year made $1.5 million in 2012, according to Cots Baseball Contracts. That ranks him in the middle among the 30 major league managers.

Baltimore won a one-game playoff against the Texas Rangers before falling to the New York Yankees in the American League Divisional Series in October.

Showalter finished second for Manager of the Year honors behind Bob Melvin of the Oakland A's.
