Shorey completes Reading move

Reading has completed the signing of Nicky Shorey on a one-year contract following his release from West Brom.

The left back enjoyed a successful seven-year spell at the Madejski Stadium – earning two England caps in the process - before leaving for Aston Villa in 2008.

Loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Fulham followed before spending two years at the Hawthorns, and Shorey is now delighted to have rejoined the Premier League newboys.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 31-year-old revealed: “It feels good [to have returned], I'm looking forward to it and I'm excited.

“I had great times here and it's a new challenge now. The club's completely changed, it's a new challenge and a new season so I'm just looking forward to that.”

Despite playing for the club on 286 occasions during his first spell at the club, the 31-year-old is aware he will have to fight to reestablish himself in the team.

“I always keep tabs on Reading and last season they did extremely well,” he added. “It's always tough to come in and try and get into a team that's done so well so you've got to fight your way in and work hard. Whenever I'm needed I'll be ready.”

Reading chairman Sir John Madejski is delighted the club has managed to bring the fullback back to the club, adding: "I would like to welcome Nicky back to Reading Football Club, he was an outstanding player here once before and we are looking forward to him triumphing even more this time around.

“I know the manager was very keen to have Nicky back, that makes a huge difference and so good luck to him once again."

Shorey is the fifth summer arrival at the Madejski, following the signings of Pierce Sweeney,  Garath McCleary, Danny Guthrie and Pavel Pogrebnyak.
