Seasoned MMA veteran, Shayna Baszler (14-6) faces Olympic wrestler, Sara McMann (5-0) at Invicta FC 2 on July 28th at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. In 2008, Shayna lost to Cris "Cyborg" Santos and in 2009, she lost to Sarah Kaufman (Strikeforce champion Ronda Rousey's next opponent) at Strikeforce Challengers 2. She's been through some MMA wars since her first pro fight in 2003.
Shayna's depth of MMA fight experience gives her an informed perspective that is evident in her comfort with being interviewed--she's hilarious. Her personality and fighting talent make her a perfect headliner for the new all-female fight promotion known as Invicta Fighting Championships.
The first Invicta event, shown live and free online, drew over 250,000 viewers. Check out this preview of what fans can expect to see from these two "tough and nasty" female fighters at Invicta FC 2.
Fight promo featuring MMA highlights from Baszler and McMann video
I listened to Shayna "Queen of Spades" Baszler holding court for 25 minutes on a blogtalkradio podcast hosted by Talk MMA Radio after seeing this tweet from @TalkMMA , "Listen to my new episode TalK MMA Radio Episode 4: 7/15/12 Shayna Baszler; Marcus Brimage at http://tobtr.com/s/3501951."
Shayna's opinion on Ronda Rousey
Shayna gave her thoughts on whether or not Strikeforce champion, Ronda Rousey is good for women's MMA. Part of the discussion centered on what Shayna thinks about women being great fighters and athletes vs women being all that plus "eye candy".
"None of that really bothers me because I come from the [former Strikeforce and UFC heavyweight champion] Josh Barnett school of entertainment: 'whatever you've got, use it'.
When it bothers me--is when they're not legitimate (fighters)...Ronda Rousey -- love her or hate her, she's badass...she used her mouth to propel herself, but that would really only [annoy] me, if she sucked...I think she's ultimately helping herself. But I don't think that any of the attention that she's bringing is going to be bad for women's MMA...because what women's MMA needs is viewers.
The reason [viewers watch] isn't the thing, she's getting people to tune in and that's really all that matters. The casual fan is not going to be flipping through channels and see two ugly-looking girls brawling with each other and stop. If they're flipping through and see that cool video promoting Rousey-Tate, that will make people want to tune in."
Fighting for Invicta FC
Shayna said she's fought in nearly every fight promotion that would place a female fight on the card--except Bellator--prior to signing with Invicta. She helped Josh Barnett corner pound-for-pound best female MMA fighter, Megumi Fujii, for her Bellator fight.
Shayna has nothing but high praise for her new fight promotion, Invicta and the women who run it, Shannon Knapp and Janet Martin. "For those who don't know, Shannon Knapp has been in the game for a long time. [She worked with Strikeforce]. They're marketing it like it's a big promotion. I mean, Big John McCarthy is the ref for this next one [Invicta FC 2]. Stitch Duran [famous cutman] is working the corner and they have [Strikeforce commentator] Maura Ranallo as the commentator...They've done their homework on these fighters. Even the prelim fights--where girls are making their pro debut, they've done their research and they're getting girls with skills..."
Case in point: I recently wrote about Jocelyn Lybarger who is making her pro debut at Invicta 2. She has spent the last eight weeks of her fight camp doing two-a-day training sessions with UFC lightweight champion, Benson Henderson, at The Lab in Arizona. Ben Henderson is Training Female Invicta FC 2 Fighter for Her Professional Debut: Fan's Look
Looks like Invicta FC 2 is off to a great start with keeping fans and their fighters happy.
