Sergio Martinez has received the WBC Boxer of the Month award for his fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. while Saul Alvarez received an honorary mention. However, Martinez is already planning for his next bout and has several options. Sergio Martinez has issued the obligatory challenge to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and started a small Twitter feud with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, but his next fight is likely to be a rematch with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Sergio Martinez is Recognized by the WBC
The World Boxing Council has named Sergio Martinez as the WBC Boxer of the Month and cited his performance at the Sept. 15 fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as the basis for the award. Although he seems grateful for the honor, Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez is more focused on his next fight than the WBC's monthly awards.
Who will Sergio Martinez Face Next?
Like most fighters who are currently active, Sergio Martinez has issued a challenge to Floyd Mayweather Jr. without getting a response. After his Sept. 15 bout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Martinez stated, "Floyd, estate listo porque te voy a encontrar en el 2013. De aquí a noviembre de 2013 te voy a encontrar de verdad. [Floyd, be ready because I'm going to find you in 2013. Between now and November 2013, I will find you truly.]" As expected, the Mayweather camp has not responded to Maravilla.
Mayweather is not the only boxer who has received a recent challenge from Martinez. On his official Twitter account, Sergio Martinez has also called out Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. He pointed out that Canelo will probably avoid the fight because he will end up like Chavez Jr. and will choose a less risky option.
Despite all of the challenges, the most likely opponent for Sergio Martinez remains Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. because both camps have expressed an interest in a rematch. The issue has become more complex after Chavez Jr.'s positive drug test for marijuana followed by the WBO's indefinite suspension. Since the WBO is requesting for Chavez Jr. to complete a drug rehabilitation program that he is refusing, there may be a longer delay before the next fight.
