Serena Williams of the United States won the Olympic gold medal in singles Saturday, destroying Maria Sharapova in the final. The score was 6-0, 6-1. Williams won the first nine games before Sharapova managed to take a game. Williams finished the match in style, serving an ace on her first match point. The match took just a bit longer than an hour to play.
The match was over as soon as it started. Williams did not lose her serve all match, and the NBC telecast pointed out that Serena dropped only one service game all tournament, in the second round against Urszula Radwanska.
From the quarterfinals on, Serena simply crushed some of the world's best players. She beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-0, 6-3. She followed that by beating the world's #1 player, Victoria Azarenka, 6-1, 6-2. Serena's success helped make up for the disappointing results from the American men in singles. The Bryan brothers, though, play for gold in doubles later today.
Serena added a gold medal in singles to the two she already earned in doubles. She and sister Venus took the gold medal in doubles in Sydney in 2000 and again in Beijing in 2008. The pair has a chance to add another gold medal this year. The duo will play their semifinal doubles match later today.
It's been quite a summer for Serena Williams. She won both the singles and doubles last month at Wimbledon. For good measure she managed to add another title at Stanford. Williams joins Steffi Graf as the only players to have won the Golden Slam - the Career Grand Slam plus an Olympic gold in singles.
Can there be any question as to who is the #1 player right now on the women's tour? I don't really care what the rankings say (and they say Serena is #4, by the way). Serena is having a tremendous year. For that matter, Sharapova is also having a very good 2012 season, and that made the score of today's match all the more shocking.
