Second Invicta FC Event Showcases Ronda Rousey's Future Opponents: Fan Reaction

Yahoo Contributor Network

Somewhere in the world, Strikeforce champion, Ronda Rousey, is replaying fight video from last night's Invicta Fighting Championship 2 held in Kansas City and streamed live to fans all over the world.

Ronda tweeted, "Woah awesome fight congrats to all the ladies bringing it tonight for @InvictaFights".

Ronda Rousey's Future Opponents

I believe Ronda will learn from watching some of her future opponents in action. Each Invicta fighter faced formidable challenges that they either solved or fell victim to by ending up in bad positions. In either case, it's back to the drawing board for all of them to prepare for their next round of opponents at a future Invicta event.

A fan asked Ronda (on Twitter) whether she was impressed with Olympic silver medalist in wrestling, Sara McMann's performance. Ronda responded, "They all impressed me. Anyone who knows fighting should be impressed."

Sara has her sights set on fighting Ronda at some point. Currently, Sara has signed (or is just about to sign) a three fight contract with Invicta. She wants to use those fights to build her MMA experience--integrating striking skills with her wrestling--before stepping up to Strikeforce level competition.

In an interview with, Sara expressed her concern that she doesn't want to automatically choose wrestling as her default reaction in her MMA fights. "I tell myself, 'you may see some (take downs) open, but unless you want to go to the ground, let it go."

Sara said that Strikeforce expressed interest in her signing with the organization when she was still "0-0", before she'd had even one professional fight. "I have 17 years of wrestling...If I had gone in too early, I'd be a wrestler in an MMA world." source

As long as Ronda is the Strikeforce champion--and Sara remains with Invicta--she will have time to wait (and develop her skills) before any match up with Ronda.

Invicta FC 2 Fight Videos

At the start of the show, over 100,000 eager fans were stymied by problems with the Invicta FC fight stream. Because I wasn't home, I tried to catch a quick look by watching on my iPhone, but I was not able to connect to the Invicta site.

InvictaFights tweeted, "We are getting ready to go live! There [are] over 100k people already trying to log on. If we have a hiccup at first, don't panic. We got this!"

Luckily, the fight videos are available on the Invicta FC Youtube channel, free for all to see and to replay as often as you like.

Here are some of my favorite fights from Invicta FC 2 on July 28, 2012:

Main Event: Shayna Baszler (14-6) vs. Sara McMann (5-0) - McMann wins by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28) video

McMann vs Baszler was a really close fight. I'm very surprised that it wasn't a split decision. Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Josh Barnett, who coaches Shayna Baszler and worked her corner for this fight tweeted, "I believe that Shayna won, hands down. But I also believe that Sara McMann is AWESOME. Great fighter, athlete. Great fight between them."

Co-Main Event: Alexis Davis (11-5) vs. Hitomi Akano (18-9) - Davis wins in second round by submission (Rear Naked Choke) video

Liz Carmouche (6-2) vs. Kaitlin Young (7-5-1) - Carmouche wins in second round by submission (Rear Naked Choke) video

Amanda Nunes (6-2) vs. Raquel Pa'aluhi (2-2) - Nunes wins in first round by submission (Rear Naked Choke) video

More fights are listed on the Invicta FC Youtube page.
