SEC reset: Florida

The SportsXchange

Game: Florida 24, Toledo 6. Despite the absence of several key players, the Gators rushed for 262 yards and held the Rockets in check for most of the afternoon. With sophomore RB Matt Jones out with a viral infection, junior RB Mack Brown picked up the slack and rushed 25 times for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns while the visitors managed to run for only 50 yards rushing and two field goals. Junior QB Jeff Driskell set a single-game career high for completion percentage by completing 17 of 22 pass attempts (77.3 percent). They were good for 153 yards a one touchdown

Takeaway: It's difficult to get much of a handle on this one since the Gators were without several key players, including starting linemen Jon Halapio and Chaz Green and Jones on offense and CB Loucheiz Purifoy on defense.

The outcome never seemed to be in much danger as the Gators held the Rockets to just 205 yards in total offense while they racked up 415. But 10 penalties have to be a concern, especially since cutting back on penalties was a priority in fall camp.

The goal wasn't to put up a huge number on the scoreboard, however, but to get a win, not reveal too much, and get out of the game healthy with a trip to Miami coming up.

That the Gators did.

-- Junior LB Ronald Powell, who missed last season because of a knee injury, celebrated his return to the field by recording a sack on Toledo's first series, giving him eight for his career.

-- Sophomore RB Valdez Showers made his move from defense to offense pay off when he set up Florida's first touchdown with a 29-yard scamper to Toledo's 11-yard line on the first play of the second quarter. He also made his first career reception.

Next: At Miami, Sept. 7.
