The suspected hamstring injury to Sebastien Bassong could play a crucial role in Norwich City's chances this season. It is unknown how serious the injury is at this time, and it is very much a case of monitoring it closely over the next few days.
At the moment, it is seen as a tight hamstring, and he could be fit for Liverpool, but if it is more serious than initially thought then he could be out for several weeks. I think the vast majority of Norwich fans have been hugely impressed with his quality since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.
Such has been his influence that it is safe to assume he is now Norwich's best defender. The partnership he has formed with Leon Barnett has looked very solid. So, the hope is the injury is not serious, and business can resume as usual against Liverpool on Saturday 29 September 2012.
But this is a classic case of hoping for the best, but planning for the worst. I have to say that I am shocked that Leon Barnett is playing first team games in the Premier League. Nevertheless, he has acquitted himself superbly and looked as solid as a rock.
However, I fear that Bassong deserves a huge amount of credit for getting the best out of his fellow central defender. Clearly, Michael Turner and Ryan Bennett are both good defenders, but in football, partnerships are so important. The understanding that the two have developed over the last few games should not be underestimated.
Norwich City's next Premier League game against Liverpool may be seen by many as an opportunity to get the first league win. But it's important to not get too carried away, and remember that we are playing a good side with quality players.
Nevertheless, the Canaries will have the best chance with players that have the best understanding. Therefore, it is important to have the club's strongest defence available for selection. I think most fans would agree that the defence has been the strongest part of Norwich City this season, since the opening day defeat against Fulham. So, Sebastian Bassong is vital to keep that record going.
