Two headed goals by Eddie Johnson were the difference in the Seattle Sounders' 2-1 win over Chivas USA on Saturday at Centurylink Field. An early Nick Labrocca goal was not enough for the Goats in what was always a tricky away day.
Chivas got things going early in the first half as a nifty move from its midfield yielded big results. Coming in only the 8th minute, Shalrie Joseph was able to set up a cutting Labrocca in the area who took it on his left foot and fired across goal beating Sounders' keeper Gspurning at the far post.
Following the opening goal, Seattle got itself back into the match with the bulk of the possession and chances. The home side would get its equalizer in the 28th minute through its leading scorer, Johnson.
Floating in a lofted set piece from the left side of goal, Seattle's German midfielder Christian Tiffert found Johnson in the box. The American was able to get enough of his head on the ball to nod it into the far corner of the goal to tie the score.
From that point on, it was most all Seattle. In the second period, the teams came out and the match was run by the Sounders with their best chance to take the lead coming in the 58th minute. Johnson was doing the supplying this time as the rushed into the box down the left and chipped it to the far post. A waiting Brad Evans got a toe on it from only five yards out with no keeper in site but could only bang it off the post.
It would be Johnson again in the center of it all late on as the Sounders grabbed a dramatic winner. A brilliant bit of individual play by Fredy Montero down the left saw him push by two Chivas defenders. He then smashed in a deep, driven cross into the area that Johnson nodded him off the outstretched fingers of Dan Kennedy.
Shortly thereafter, the final whistle blew and Seattle took the full three points. The win put the club past Real Salt Lake into second place in the Western Conference. Chivas is consigned to the fact that it has little to play for the remainder of the season.
