COMMENTARY | The beleaguered Seattle Seahawks' offensive line will have at least a couple more weeks before it is back at full strength.
In the Seahawks' past two games, Russell Wilson was sacked a career-high 7 times by the St. Louis Rams and then pressured on a career-high 55 percent of his drop backs against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Seattle managed to narrowly win both games, but the offensive line is becoming a bigger question mark every week.
Its struggles have been largely due to injury. The Seahawks haven't had their expected starting offensive line on the field at the same time since Week 3. Left tackle Russell Okung suffered the most serious injury, as his toe will keep him out until at least Week 12.
Right tackle Breno Giacomini has been out since Sept. 30 after undergoing surgery on his knee. It was initially unclear if Giacomini would be able to return in a matter of weeks, or if the surgery would take longer to recover from. The latest update is that Giacomini is at least a couple of more games from being ready to play again.
Monday, head coach Pete Carroll said that Giacomini would start practicing but "it will likely be a couple of more weeks" before he is at full game speed. Rookie seventh round pick Michael Bowie has played solidly in Giacomini's absence, but the Seahawks would likely not give Bowie the starting spot if both were healthy.
The Seahawks need both Giacomini and Okung back as fast as possible so they can be at full capacity for a critical two game stretch beginning Week 12 against the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers. The schedule plays out well currently, as neither the Atlanta Falcons or Minnesota Vikings, the Seahawks' next two opponents, have generated much of a pass rush.
Of course, the same could have been said about the Buccaneers, who put a ton of pressure on Russell Wilson all game long. One thing is clear, Seattle's offensive line can't keep playing like this if the team is to make a Super Bowl run.
