Seahawks claim QB Daniels from 49ers

The SportsXchange

The rivalry between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks continues to extend beyond the playing field.

The teams have routinely traded punches in personnel moves in recent seasons, with the latest being the Seahawks' claim on quarterback B.J. Daniels.

The 49ers waived Daniels on Tuesday with the decision to sign John Skelton to compete with Colt McCoy as Colin Kaepernick's backup. San Francisco was expected to sign Daniels to the practice squad had he cleared waivers. The team spent a seventh-round pick on the former South Florida star, and the coaching staff spoke highly of his upside as a dual-threat quarterback during the preseason.

"We'll be hopeful that B.J. will return, and trust that we have a plan for him and the process of developing him and getting him ready to play in the National Football League," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Wednesday before learning of the move.

The Seahawks apparently shared that vision, deciding to part with backup middle linebacker John Lotulelei to snag Daniels away from San Francisco.

In Seattle, Daniels will serve as the third quarterback behind Russell Wilson and Tarvaris Jackson. Daniels can also provide some insight on the 49ers' offense and how San Francisco schemes its version of the read-option.

It's a bit of payback for the 49ers claiming fourth-round wide receiver Chris Harper from Seattle during final rosters cuts.

The teams also went toe-to-toe during the offseason, with the 49ers dealing for wide receiver Anquan Boldin shortly after the Seahawks acquired Percy Harvin from Minnesota.

Last season, San Francisco claimed wide receiver Ricardo Lockette from Seattle. Lockette has since been released.
