Schaefer on Potential Mayweather-Pacquiao Bout: Fan Reaction

For years, boxing fans have hoped for a super-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, but the Filipino congressman's controversial loss to Timothy Bradley has reduced the chances of the bout ever happening.

Mayweather wasn't willing to accept a 50/50 split when Pacquiao was on a seven-year unbeaten streak, and he'll probably want a larger portion of the revenues now.

Golden Boy Promotion CEO Richard Schaefer won't completely rule out the possibility of a super-fight between the two, but he doesn't think Bob Arum - Pacquiao's promoter - is interested in a fight against Mayweather.

"As I said before, if Bob Arum wants to sit down and discuss a fight, I'm certainly open to do that...no problem," Schaefer said during an interview with Boxingscene.com. "Again, I am convinced, as I was before the fight and as I am now, that it is not a fight that Bob Arum wants. My opinion is not going to change and he can prove me wrong."

Interestingly, Schaefer doesn't think Pacquiao's loss will affect the super-fight much. But he clearly isn't open to the idea of a 50/50 split.

"I believe that it wasn't a 50-50 fight before and my opinion has not changed," Schaefer added. "To go and say 'now you lost' and things like that. ... I don't really want to use that argument to be fair. I think you really have to look at the revenues that Floyd Mayweather generates and take it into the context of the revenues that Manny Pacquiao generates, and that's how you determine a fair split. That was my opinion before and that's not going to change because of Pacquiao getting the short end of the decision."

I agree with Schaefer's assessment of a Mayweather-Pacquiao bout, considering the fact that most boxing fans don't consider Pacquiao's loss against Bradley as a legitimate defeat. After all, Pacquiao actually put on a pretty dominant performance against Bradley, rocking him several times during their June 9 encounter.
