A few weeks ago I said that the Miami Dolphins merely wanted to see meaningful December football games. Well, we have had three so far and despite some very key injuries the Dolphins have managed to go 2-1 in those contests.

Following those results, the team has clearly saved the most meaningful for their last game of 2016. Christmas Eve against the division rival Buffalo Bills. A win on Saturday in Orchard Park coupled with a Christmas Day gift from the Chiefs and the Dolphins are in the postseason for the first time since Chad Pennington was calling the signals.

However, the injuries continue to pile up for the Dolphins with Byron Maxwell likely out for this one and Jelani Jenkins not participating this week and also likely to miss this game. Xavien Howard did a great job stepping in for the injured Maxwell on Saturday and he will be called upon to do the same against the Bills.

Kiko Alonso is still nicked up but will be on the field for the “most important” game the Dolphins have played in many years. The “next man up” mentality will be put to the test once again though thanks to other injuries across the rest of the roster.

I’m hopeful that Matt Moore can shake off a bit more of the rust this weekend because he’ll need to for sure. Last Saturday was against the Jets so there was room for error. Against a Rex Ryan defense, there will be little room for mistakes. Some of those wobbly passes that he got away with against the Jets will not be acceptable this week. I look for improvement here and I also expect to see more of the deep ball.

The Dolphins managed to get a win in the first meeting in South Florida. The conditions won’t be so friendly in Buffalo….in late December. The running game has faded the past few weeks and it’s not all the running backs’ fault. Most, if not all of the blame sits on the offensive line and more importantly the play at the center position.

Anthony Steen had been dropping off in recent weeks and coach Gase did what he has done this season — he replaced him. Kraig Urbik did a serviceable job on Saturday but the position needs to be upgraded in order for the running game to get back on track.

So, you wanted meaningful football? You’ve got it. The most meaningful game in many years, Let’s hope our beloved team is up to the challenge. It would be nice to have a Merry Christmas indeed.

Happy Holidays everyone, enjoy the game!
