Mother Nature was apparently in a foul mood on Thursday, September 27, 2012. Instead of serving up sunshine and righteous swell, she greeted the SATA Airlines Azores Pro's surfers with a scowling sky and blustery conditions. As such, the contest's organizers had no choice but to declare a lay day. I can't say that I blame them. Nonetheless, it was still disappointing news. Here are a few more contest details:
Surf Heats to Keep an Eye On
Providing that Mother Nature's mood improves, the Women's SATA Airlines Azores Pro may well get underway on Friday morning in the Azores Islands. Round 48 is expected to kick off with a surf heat between Bianca Buitendag (ZAF), Anali Gomez (PER), Minami Takechi (JPN) and Skye Burgess (AUS). All four women are highly ranked in their respective regions. As such, it should prove to be one heck of a surf heat. I plan on cheering for goofy footers, Bianca Buitendag and Anali Gomez. In my opinion, each one has a great chance at winning the surf heat.
The rest of Round 48's line-up looks promising as well. I plan on keeping a close eye on Justine Dupont (FRA) during her Heat 5 matchup against Brittani Nicholl (AUS) and Dominic Barona (ECU). Dupont performed exceptionally well at the EDP Surf Pro Estoril. Hence, I am curious as to whether or not she'll be able to continue her forward trajectory. I think that she definitely has the skills necessary to succeed in the surf heat. The only question is, "Will Mother Nature provide the weather and the waves that Dupont needs in order to get the job done?"
Round 48, Heat 10 is another matchup that I am looking forward to. It is set to feature Frankie Harrer (USA), Alisha Gonsalves (USA), Joanne Defay (FRA) and Nage Melamed (HAW). Personally, I'd like to see Nage Melamed and Frankie Harrer finish strong. If I had to pick between the two, I would root for Frankie Harrer. I really like the way that she surfs. I took notice of her while following the 2012 PacSun USA Surf Team and the National Scholastic Surfing Association. If you ask me, Harrer has moxie. She is also able to unleash a solid backside attack and seems to handle large waves with ease. I can't wait to see how well she does against the other surfers.
The Women's SATA Airlines Azores Pro is slated to run through Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Praia de Santa Barbara in Sao Miguel. For fans that are interested, the contest's organizers are expected to broadcast the surfing action via the event's website. Let's just hope that the weather improves.
Killeen Gonzalez enjoys watching water sports with her family. She also has a history of interviewing pro surfers.
