Seven straight postseason wins later, the San Francisco Giants are the 2012 World Series champions!
As a Giants fan following the team's successes and struggles since the first game of the regular season, it's hard to believe that the team has won two titles in three seasons. With many hurdles to overcome, the determined team persevered and had everything come together when it mattered most for a sweep of the American League champion Detroit Tigers.
Going back to the regular season, the Giants needed to improvise once closer Brian Wilson had season-ending surgery. Soon after the All-Star break, Melky Cabrera was suspended 50 games due to PEDs. The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired big-name players like Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez while the Giants had only a "blockbuster" acquisition of Marco Scutaro from the Colorado Rockies.
Watching the World Series unfold in front of my eyes, the Giants beat Justin Verlander in Game 1 thanks to not one, not two, but three home runs by World Series MVP Pablo Sandoval. Game 2 saw a comeback performance by Madison Bumgarner and two excellent plays by unsung postseason hero Gregor Blanco-a relay throw to get Prince Fielder out at home plate and a bunt single that would not roll out of play. Game 3 was another 2-0 gem by the Giants pitching staff, as Ryan Vogelsong continued his miraculous run through the postseason and Tim Lincecum served as the team's weapon out of the bullpen, finishing the postseason with a 2.55 ERA, .141 batting average against, and 20 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings pitched.
Game 4 featured clutch hitting by Buster Posey, Marco Scutaro and Ryan Theriot for the exciting extra-innings victory for the sweep. When Scutaro had the game-winning hit and Theriot slid in for the Giants' fourth run, my gut was telling me that this was all the Giants would need for the win, even with Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera coming up to bat. As he stared at a strike three from Sergio Romo, elation erupted in my household, outside, and on the television screen in the faces of all the ecstatic San Francisco players.
As the super-slow-motion cameras caught their reactions following the final out of each World Series game, the Giants were overwhelmed with joy following this victory. From simultaneous Facebook and Twitter posts displaying uncontrollable anticipation to the celebratory posts of another World Series title, this World Series win for Giants fans feels incredibly different than the 2010 title.
2010 was a year of torture and misfits. 2012 was about resilience and coming back from what many viewed as insurmountable odds.
In just three years, the Giants helped fulfill this Bay Area fan's dreams of not one but two baseball titles. Once again, the Giants are World Champions of the baseball world.
