San Francisco Giants Who Have Received the Key to the City of San Francisco: Fan Breakdown

Yahoo Contributor Network

Receiving the key to a city is a sign of gratitude, trust, respect, and honor. So when one is given the key to a city, they know that they have earned the respect of the leaders of said city and must have done something great to earn it.

Among recipients of keys to a city are usually those who have carved out a special place in the hearts of those who make a living there. In those instances, they are usually the people we look up to, the ones we admire, and are often very much in the public eye. Some candidates, say in the city of San Francisco, could very well be athletes, and perhaps even members of the San Francisco Giants. (Didn't see that one coming did you?)

With that, let's take a look at which San Francisco Giants have received the key to the city of San Francisco in recent history:

Matt Cain

On June 26, 2012 San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee presented Matt Cain with a key to the city of San Francisco as well as a proclamation that June 13 would be recognized as Matt Cain day within the city. As many of you know, Matt Cain pitched a perfect game on June 13, 2012 against the Houston Astros. Not only was it just the 22nd occurrence in MLB history of a perfect game, it was the first one in the Giants' franchise history.

Barry Bonds

Since joining the Giants in 1993, Bonds was the face of the San Francisco Giants. And throughout his career, he became known as the home run hitter. Not just to the Giants but to major league baseball - a moniker which came to fruition on August 7, 2007. On that date he surpassed Hank Aaron as the all-time home run king, a truly historic moment. For that feat, and all he had given to the city of San Francisco, he received the key to the city from Mayor Gavin Newsom.

2010 San Francisco Giants

The San Francisco Giants had yet to win a World Championship since moving from New York to San Francisco back in 1958. So when the Giants took the major leagues by storm in 2010, winning their first World Series since 1954 in New York - and their first ever in San Francisco - the historic moment had to be commemorated. So at the end of their World Series parade, Mayor Gavin Newsom presented the team with the key to the city of San Francisco.

His one fault, admittedly, as many of his friends and family would say, is his love for the Los Angeles Lakers. Growing up, Magic Johnson was his favorite basketball player and he fell in love with the team. He chalks it up to, "Not knowing any better". Now his love for sports has turned just as academic as it is intuitive and he follows most all sports all over the nation.
