San Francisco 49ers Vs. New York Jets Preview: Alex Smith, Offense Look to Bounce Back

Yahoo Contributor Network

COMMENTARY | The New York Jets will face a well-rested San Francisco 49ers team that will play angry coming off a disappointing 24-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh has his team practicing at Youngstown State in Ohio during the week in order to avoid a quick back-and-forth trip to the East Coast when they visit New York on Sunday. It's turned into a mini-camp of sorts, and the team is focused on the task at hand with half the traveling out of the way.

That doesn't bode well for Rex Ryan's group, and the Jets may be in for a long day as the 49ers' defense will be looking to take out their frustration on the offensively-challenged team in green.

The Jets are ranked 22nd in the NFL on offense and will go against the 49ers' 11th ranked defense. After the struggling to move the ball against the Vikings, the 49ers will head into the contest ranked 21st on offense, but should fare well against a battered Jets secondary.

Alex Smith will be the man under center and the de facto leader of the Niners going into Week 4, and it's no secret that he will have to prove doubters wrong yet again after throwing his first interception in 249 pass attempts.

This could also be an interesting week for Randy Moss, who won't have the opportunity to go up against one of his favorite NFL adversaries in injured cornerback Darrelle Revis after Revis was lost for the year with an ACL injury. Moss has reportedly been satisfied with his reduced role and has maintained his composure despite limited opportunities.

How long that will last remains to be seen.

Sans Revis, he could be in for his biggest day as a member of the 49ers, and that will spell certain trouble for the Jets' defense. San Francisco is still in the conversation of best NFL team in 2012, and New York is a team they are supposed to beat. With the exception of the game in Minneapolis, the 49ers have looked balanced and have executed well on both sides of the ball.

That's the team that needs to show up against the Jets. If the Niners can simply take care of business with a win and do what they are supposed to do -- they are four-point favorites on the road according to OddsShark -- then in the paraphrased words of Dennis Green, the 49ers are who we thought they were.

What they are now is an excellent team waiting for a chance to redeem themselves from a lackluster performance.
