Note: The opinions expressed here are my takes on the San Francisco 49ers' key players during the 2012 fantasy football season. As always, use your best judgment and conduct your own research on who to start or bench each week. You know your individual team and/or league situation better than anyone else. All statistics and point totals are based on Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football standard scoring system.
Alex Smith, QB
Smith finished the week earning just 6.92 fantasy points in a win over the New York Jets. This wee he faces a Buffalo Bills defense that has given up an average of 21.44 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season. While San Francisco is primarily a running team, Smith has a fine matchup against the Bills. Look for some improvement this week earning at least 15.00 fantasy points.
Frank Gore, RB
Gore finished the week earning 13.50 fantasy points against the Jets. This week he faces a Bills' defense that has allowed an average of 25.20 fantasy points per game to running backs this season. While Gore remains the primary running back in the 49ers' ground game, Brandon Jacobs should see his fair share of touches this week thereby reducing Gore's fantasy impact. He should still have a very strong game so expect at least 12.00 fantasy points this week.
Brandon Jacobs, RB
Jacobs is certainly one to keep your eye on now that he has returned to action. It is assumed he will be used in short-yardage and goal-line situations, which gives him value, albeit risky. While it is difficult to estimate a fantasy point total this week due to an undefined role, be sure to add him to your watch list moving forward.
Michael Crabtree, WR
Crabtree had another disappointing week in the fantasy point department against the Jets earning just 1.50 fantasy points. This week he faces a Buffalo defense that has given up an average of 29.60 fantasy points to wide receivers this season. Crabtree has the unfortunate situation of being a part of a run-dominated offense meaning he will rarely have that "big game" that fantasy owners covet. Look for a modest 6.00 fantasy point game this week.
Vernon Davis, TE
Davis had a meager 2.80 fantasy point performance in a run dominated game against the Jets last week. This week he faces a Buffalo defense that has allowed an average of 7.50 fantasy points per game to tight ends this season. While Davis can be hit or miss due to the nature of the San Francisco offense, he has a very good matchup this week making him worthy of a start. Look for around 9.00 fantasy points this week.
San Francisco had a phenomenal week earning 29.00 fantasy points against the Jets. This week they face a Buffalo team that has given up an average of 8.00 fantasy points per game to team defense this season. Bills' quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has thrown a number of picks this year making for this a very favorable matchup after the monster week San Francisco had against New York. Look for around 12.00 fantasy points this week.
