After Xavier Thames sunk a 3-pointer, the Aztecs held a 21-12 lead with 11:59 remaining in the first half. Cal State Bakersfield cut the lead to eight after guard Stephon Carter hit a free throw with 4:50 left before the Aztecs pushed the lead back to double digits again. Tapley's 3-pointer just seconds before the halftime horn gave the Aztecs their biggest lead of the half. He led the Aztecs first-half scoring, going 5 of 8 on field-goal attempts for 12 points. Guard Jamal Franklin finished with 11 in the half. The Aztecs converted 11 of their 22 shots (50 percent) to only 8 of 25 (32 percent) for the Roadrunners.
