Note: The opinions expressed here are my takes on the San Diego Chargers' key players during the 2012 fantasy football season. As always, use your best judgment and conduct your own research on who to start or bench each week. You know your individual team and/or league situation better than anyone else. All statistics and point totals are based on Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football standard scoring system.
Philip Rivers, QB
Rivers finished the week earning 15.36 fantasy points in a win over the Kansas City Chiefs. This week he faces a New Orleans Saints' defense that has given up an average of 21.10 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season. Rivers will need to throw the ball often if he expects to win the game this week. With that being said his fantasy numbers should be stronger this week earning at least 18.00 fantasy points.
Jackie Battle, RB
Battle finished the week earning 20.10 fantasy points against the Chiefs. This week he faces a New Orleans defense that has allowed an average of 27.93 fantasy points to running backs this season. Owners of Battle are in a tough spot in that he has put up very strong fantasy numbers this season, however the Chargers still have confidence in running back Ryan Mathews despite health and fumbling concerns. Battle is now listed at the top of the depth chart but will share touches moving forward. Look for at least 9.00 fantasy points in this very favorable matchup.
Ryan Mathews, RB
Matthews finished the week earning 8.20 fantasy points against Kansas City. This week he shares the very favorable matchup with fellow running back Battle. Despite Battle getting the start, Matthews will get his fair share of carries. If San Diego gets into the red zone, chances are those touches will shift to Battle. Look for at least 10.00 fantasy points this week.
Malcom Floyd, WR
Floyd finished the week earning just 2.30 fantasy points against the Chiefs. This week he faces a Saints' defense that has allowed an average of 29.43 fantasy points to wide receivers this season. Floyd has put up disappointing fantasy numbers the past two weeks but this week's favorable matchup should see him breaking out of that slump. Look for at least 9.00 fantasy points this week.
Antonio Gates, TE
Gates finished the week earning 5.90 fantasy points against Kansas City. This week he faces a New Orleans defense that has given up an average of just 4.13 fantasy points per game to tight ends this season. Gates should benefit from Rivers' increased passes and the New Orleans weak defense giving owners hope he will be able to break out of his season long fantasy slump. Look for at least 9.00 fantasy points on the week.
