San Antonio Rampage 2, Chicago Wolves 1

The SportsXchange

SAN ANTONIO -- Scott Timmins' easy wrist shot -- which Chicago Wolves goalie Eddie Lack likely stops nine times out of 10 in most any other situation -- proved to be the deciding goal as the San Antonio Rampage defeated the visiting Wolves 2-1 Wednesday night at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

More of a flip than a full-power shot, Timmins' goal, which came at 9:03 of the third period, was his 11th of the season, assisted by Nolan Yonkman and Michael Caruso.

The Wolves had a chance to tie on their third power play of the game in the third period, but strong defensive play by the Rampage kept Chicago from knotting the score. Chicago also pulled its goalie for the first time this season to gain an advantage, but that ploy also failed as San Antonio swept the four-game season series with Chicago, all decided by one goal each.

The AHL Midwest Division-leading Wolves dropped to 38-26 after the loss. San Antonio improves to 38-28 on the season but remains third in the West Division.

The Wolves dodged bullets twice in the first period, going down 5-3 on a power play, yet kept the Rampage from capitalizing. Finally, at 16:14 of the opening stanza, San Antonio defenseman Roman Derlyuk scored his second goal of the season, giving the Rampage a 1-0 lead.

The Wolves tied the game at 1-1 at 14:58 of the second period when Bill Sweatt passed the puck to linemate Michael Davies, who slipped his shot past Rampage goalie Jacob Markstrom. Also assisting on Davies' 11th goal of the season was Jordan Schroeder.

The Rampage outshot the Wolves in each of the first two periods 10-6 and 14-12, but Chicago held the edge 14-8 in the final period, for what it's worth.

The Wolves are now 1-2 through the first three games of the current seven-game roadtrip. They split back-to-back matches at Abbotsford last Thursday and Friday. The Wolves continue their road trip at Houston on Friday, Oklahoma City on Saturday, Texas next Tuesday (April 11) and wrap it up at Grand Rapids next Friday (April 13), before returning home for their final two games of the regular season vs. Milwaukee (April 14) and Peoria (April 15).
