Samuelsson returns to Red Wings

Forward Mikael Samuelsson is rejoining the team with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2008.

The Detroit Red Wings agreed to terms on a two-year contract Sunday, the team announced.

Samuelsson, 35, was the third unrestricted free agent to sign with the Red Wings, joining goaltender Jonas Gustavsson and forward Damien Brunner.

Samuelsson spent last season with the Florida Panthers after he was traded by the Vancouver Canucks. He left the Red Wings for the Canucks after the 2009 season and posted back-to-back 50-point seasons for the first time in his career with Vancouver.

"We know him and he can skate," Wings general manager Ken Holland told NHL.com. "He has the ability to chip in with some scoring, he has a real good shot and he can transport the puck up the ice on the power play.

"He's a real good solid pro and again we know him. You see guys 38, 39, and 40 years old getting three-year deals, but I think he's a good, young 35 because of his ability to skate."

Samuelsson had 67 goals and 92 assists in 278 regular-season games with Detroit from 2005 to 2009.
