Sam Hornish Jr. is still searching for a Sprint Cup ride because Penske Racing has not found a sponsor for another car in the series. The team is actively searching for a way to finance the ride, but Hornish's time in the No. 22 car will end this season. The arrival of Joey Logano in 2013 means Hornish is back to having no ride in the Sprint Cup.
Penske Racing is Looking for Another Sponsor
Penske Racing has been searching for another sponsor for several months to provide Sam Hornish Jr. with a ride in the Sprint Cup Series for 2013. Although Penske has assured Hornish that he will have a full-time Nationwide ride next season, the Sprint Cup is more difficult. Tim Cindric mentioned, "I foresee Sam driving for us a full season Nationwide next year and hopefully some Cup races, as well."
Penske does not seem to be any closer to adding another car for the Sprint Cup in 2013. The team has been rumored to be involved in negotiations with Alliance Truck Parts and Wurth, but the company does not seem to be interested. Cindric has pointed out, "Sam is obviously a good fit for our team, but when you look at in on paper, it becomes a little more difficult." Sponsors are simply not interested at this point.
A Potential Schedule for Sam Hornish Jr. in 2013
Joey Logano will take over the No. 22 car in 2013, but Sam Hornish Jr. will be allowed to finish racing it for the rest of 2012. Hornish, who expected to get a full-time ride in the No. 22 next year, still has several options with Penske Racing. Despite the team's inability to secure another sponsor, Penske has promised to allow him to race full-time in Nationwide with the possibility of a limited schedule in the Sprint Cup.
Sam Hornish Jr. is currently ranked in 58th place in the Sprint Cup standings and is in third place in the Nationwide standings. Although he is desperate to switch to the Sprint Cup full-time, it does not seem to be a possibility for 2013.
