Saints' Shanle: NFL blew bounty scandal out of proportion

Saints linebacker Scott Shanle feels that the NFL blew the bounty scandal out of proportion, and wanted to make an example of the team, according to a New Orleans Times-Picayune report.

Shanle told the paper that the Saints had an incentive program, which included payouts between $500 and $1,000 for big hits and other key plays. This included the highly publicized "cart-offs" and "knockouts," but Shanle said those terms came from "Gregg's language," referring to former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Shanle said those terms didn't specify intentionally injuring, or trying to injure, an opponent.

"I never saw any money for injuring somebody exchange hands," Shanle told the Times-Picayune. "Gregg said crazy stuff. If you take him literally, you're gonna be locked up. But he was the best motivator I've ever been around."
