Much like the San Diego Chargers signed Robert Meachem to quickly fill the void left by Vincent Jackson, the Saints appear to be getting aggressive to address one of their own needs.
Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network tweeted that he’s hearing the Saints “plan to make a push” for free agent offensive guard Ben Grubbs. While he hasn’t officially signed with the Buccaneers—or any other team for that matter—just yet, free agent guard Carl Nicks isn’t expected to re-sign with New Orleans.
Grubbs—a five-year veteran out of Auburn—has started 58 of a possible 64 games for the Baltimore Ravens over the last four years. After Nicks, many consider Grubbs to be the next best offensive guard in this year’s free agent class.
It should be interesting to see if Grubbs waits for Nicks to set the market before signing a contract of his own. But if the Saints come out offering big-time money, the 28-year-old may quickly forget about Nicks and put his name on the dotted line.
