Saint Louis 62, Virginia Commonwealth 56

The SportsXchange

Saint Louis gave Virginia Commonwealth a taste of its own medicine on the defensive end, and as a result can call themselves the Atlantic 10 tournament champions.

Kwamain Mitchell scored 19 points as the top-seeded Billikens earned a 62-56 victory over the No. 2 Rams at the Barclays Center in New York.

VCU was held to 33.9 percent shooting and made just three of its 18 three-point attempts. Dwayne Evans added 16 points and hit eight of his 11 attempts at the free-throw line.

Treveon Graham had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Rams, and VCU's "havoc" defense forced 17 turnovers. But it had difficulty playing its usual intense defense without picking up fouls, and St. Louis had 33 free throw attempts to VCU's 21.

Both schools were making their first appearance in the Atlantic 10 championship game. The Billikens have been in the conference since 2005, while it is VCU's first season in the league.

St. Louis led 29-21 at halftime, forcing 10 VCU turnovers and holding the Rams to 29.6 percent from the field and 0-for-5 from 3-point range.
