Safety dance: 49ers add Bethea, lose Whitner

The SportsXchange

Safety Antoine Bethea is expected to sign a four-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

Bethea, 29, started every game the past six seasons as the backbone of the Indianapolis Colts' secondary.

He replaces Donte Whitner, who agreed to terms with the Cleveland Browns on a four-year deal to return to his home state.

The 49ers, who released cornerback Carlos Rogers, could have multiple new starters in the secondary. Cornerbacks Tarell Brown, Perrish Cox and Eric Wright all are also unrestricted free agents.

Bethea was better in run support than in pass coverage last season. He had 100-plus tackles in five of six seasons with the Colts.
