FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) -- Sacred Heart scored three touchdowns on defense and another on special teams on its way to a single-game school record for points in a 78-35 victory over Chowan on Saturday.
Spotting Chowan (1-2) a 14-0 lead, the Pioneers went on to surpass the program's previous record of 62 points.
Sean Bell's 5-yard run put Sacred Heart ahead 15-14 in the first quarter, and the Pioneers led the rest of the way. The Pioneers rushed for 308 yards, 2 yards more than their FCS second-best average going into the game. No Pioneer ran for over 100 yards.
Following Bell's TD, David Berment returned a blocked punt for a score. The Pioneers also scored on an interception in the second quarter and two fumble returns in the third.
The Pioneers, picked to finish last in the Northeast Conference in the coaches poll, improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2008.
